Select 5-Convert's at the desktop for: —Fick Equation (REE) —Nitrogen Balance —Meq/Mg conversions

Fick Equation calculates Resting Energy Expenditure from several clinical variables.
Nitrogen Balance calculates niytrogen balance and catabolic index from dietary nitrogen and urine urea nitrogen.
Conversions allows conversion of Milliequivalents to and from milligrams for potassium, sodium, calcium, and phosphorus.

REE (Fick Equation) |
The Fick Equation calculates resting energy expenditure (REE) from arterial and venous oxygen saturation, hemoglobin, and cardiac output.

A. Strike SaO2 button to enter arterial saturation in percent. B. Strike SvO2 button to enter venous saturation in percent. C. Strike Hemoglobin to enter laboratory value of Hemoglobin, in grams per deciliter. D. Strike CO to enter Cardiac Output in liters/minute. E.Strike REE to obtain Resting Energy Expenditure in KCAL/day. F. Strike Done to return to Convert's main menu.

A-E Values for SaO2, SvO2, HGB, and Cardiac Output have been entered, and the REE button struck to obtain REE.
G. Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) in KCAL per day is displayed. F. Strike DONE to return to the CONVERSIONS menu.

Nitrogen Balance |
Nitrogen balance in grams per day, and catabolic index, is calculated from dietary nitrogen, and urine urea nitrogen. Adjustments for diarrhea and fistula loss are made
.Strike Nitrogen Balance at the Convt's frame.

A. Strike Dietary Nitrogen to enter dietary nitrogen in grams per day. Dietary nitrogen can be calculated as N=P/6.25, where N=Dietary Nitrogen; P=Dietary Protein in grams per day B. Strike UUN to enter Urine Urea Nitrogen in grams per day. C. Check the box if there is Diarrhea present D. Check the box if there is a Fistula loss E. Strike Nitrogen Balance F. Read nitrogen balance in grams per day. G. Read catabolic index in units. H. Strike Done to return to the Conversions main menu.

Nitrogen Balance and Fick equation formulas |
Nitrogen Balance is computed as follows (ref. Velasco, JPEN 14:517-22 (1990); Shaw-Delaney, Clin Nutr 6:257-66 (1987))
NB=NI - NO where NB = Nitrogen Balance NI = Dietary Nitrogen (gms per day) NO = Nitrogen out per day (def below) Note NB is negative if NO > NB.
NO = UUN + K + D + F where UUN = Urine Urea Nitrogen K = A conversion constant K = 4 if UUN < 30 grams/day K = 6 if UUN >= 30 grams/day
D = Diarrhea factor D = 2.5 if diarrhea present D = 0 if no diarrhea present
F = Fistula factor F = 1.5 if patient has fistula
Catabolic Index is calculated as follows: CI = UUN - NI/2 + 3 where CI = Catabolic Index UUN = Urine Urea Nitrogen NI = Dietary Nitrogen
CI > 5 ==> Severe Hypercatabolism 1 <= CI <= 5 ==> Moderate Hypercatabolism 0 <= CI < 1 ==> Mild Hypercatabolism CI < 0 ==> No Hypercatabolism
The Fick Equation is:
REE = CO * Hgb * (SaO2-SvO2) * 95.18
—REE = resting energy expenditure, KCAL/day —CO = Cardiac Output, liters/min —SaO2 = Saturation of arterial blood, in percent —SvO2 = Saturation of venous blood, in percent

Converting MEQ to MG & MG to MEQ |
Strike Conversions at the Convt's frame to activate MG/MEQconversions.

Milliequivalents to milligrams A. Strike MEQ to MG (milliequivalents to milligrams). B. Enter the value of Milliequivalents you wish to convert. The conversion will be done for Potassium (K), Sodium (Na), Phosphorus (P), and Calcium (Ca). Example: 100 meq. C. Read the milligram conversions for K, Na, P, and Ca. Example: 3910, 2300, 2000, 1550 mg. D. Strike DONE when finished.

Milligrams to milliequivalents. A. Strike MG to MEQ (milligrams to milliequivalents). B. Enter the value of milligrams you wish to convert. The conversion will be done for Potassium (K), Sodium (Na), Phosphorus (P), and Calcium (Ca). Example: 2000 mg. C. Read the milligram conversions for K, Na, P, and Ca. Example: 51.2, 87.0, 100.0,129.0 meq. D. Strike DONE when finished.
