Enteral formula calculations

Select Enteral Formula to compute nutritional deliveries from a selected enteral (tube feeding) formula.

1. Select an enteral formula by name. You may scroll the list of formulas (1) by tapping the down and up arrows. Highlight the selected formula, then strike OK. Your P-21 will contain approximately 60 formulas. You may add or change formulas as desired.

2. After selection of the enteral formula (example: NUTREN), the P-21 will display all nutritional information based on a dosage of 50 ml/hr or 1200 ml/day. To change dose, tap Ml/hr (3) or Ml/da (4) and enter the desired dose rate.

Sorting the formula list by nutrient deliveries

You may sort the enteral formulas by a selected nutrient

The list of formulas is first displayed in alphabetical order. Sometimes you may wish to sort the formulas on their nutritional values, to assist your selection of a formula.
Strike Sort Order.

A menu of nutritional parameters will be displayed. Select the value upon which the sort will be performed. This will sort all formulas on this parameter, largest first. When you have selected the paramter to sort on, strike GO.  NOTE: The sort takes about 10 seconds.

This example shows a sort Kcal/ml. The sorted list will show the formulas with the highest values of Kcal/ml first. Select the formula of your choice, then strike OK .

Entering dose in ml/hr or ml/day

The dose of the enteral formula can be entered in ml/hr plus hrs/day,  or ml/day.

1. Tap Ml/hr OR Ml/day. You may also enter Hrs/day if your eneral formula is not given for 24 hours.

2. Tap the keys to enter the correct dose in Ml/hr or Ml/day.

3. All nutritional values for NUTREN 1.0 are displayed for a dose rate of 1500 Ml/day.
Abbreviations:
d - day
RDA% - percent RDA requirements
Pro — protein
CHO - carbohydrate
H20 - water in enteral solution
Fib - fiber
K+ potassium
Ca - calcium
VitC - vitamin C
Na - sodium
Zn - zinc
Fe - iron
Tot vol -- total volume, including flushes
Free w -- free water, including flushes.

Dose recalculations from desired nutrient deliveries

You may recalculate dose by specifying a desired delivery of any nutrient.

In this example, the desired delivery of fat is 100 g/d. (Any nutrient may be used.) Strike Fat g/d

Enter 100 on the keypad. Strike OK.

The dose rate is automatically recalculated to delivery 100 g/d of Fat. Nutritional values for NUTREN 2.0 at a new dose rate of 39.3 ml/hr or 943.4 ml per day are displayed. You may recalculate dose based on any other nutrient or value by striking appropriate button. To use a different formula, strike Formula.

Volumes, water, free water, and flushes

You may specify flushes with medication and per shift, and calculate free ater and total volume for any situation

Volumes and free water.
The following values are used in calculating volumes and free water.
Ml/hr -- Ml per hour. Tapping this allows you to enter this value directly.

Ml/da -- Ml per day. This can be entered directly, or is calculated as Ml/hr * hrs/day.
Hrs/day -- The hours per day the formula is administered. Tap to reset
Flush -- The total flush volume used per day. Activates the flush volume frame.
Tot vol -- Total volume. (Ml/day + flush volume). Tapping this activates the flush volume frame and allows you to specify flush volume.
H20 -- The amount of water delivered by the enteral formula
Free w -- Free water . H20 + flush volume. Tapping this activates the flush volume frame.

Flush volume frame. This frame is called by tapping tot vol or free w. You may specify the number of medications per day, the flush before, during, and after each medication, and the shift flushes per 8-hour shift. The total flush in ml per day is calculated.
You may bypass the above calculation by tapping Total flush and entering the total flush directly.
